Suggested Routes

Our interactive map has lots of suggested routes marked around historic Cairo. Our favorite sites are marked with green pins, and yellow pins are also very good. Some of the easiest routes to start with are around Coptic Cairo (search the map for “Coptic Cairo,” for example), Muizz Street, and Ibn Tulun. You can follow the routes or just wander on your own.

The most important thing to remember when exploring Cairo is that the city is unpredictable. Sites can close any time without notice and access to certain areas might be limited or suddenly open after several years. Visiting the same site can be dramatically different from day to day. Patience and flexibility are necessary and it’s helpful if you can plan frequent trips at different times of the day, week, or year. But even if you’re just in Cairo for a few days, you can have a wonderful experience by getting out on the streets with the help of this map.
