There is no city in the world quite like Cairo, with its thousands upon thousands of years of major human civilization at the tip of the Nile Delta.  From the pyramids of Saqqara and Giza and the wonders of Memphis and Heliopolis to Babylon with its Roman fortress, ancient churches, and synagogues, and on to some of the most perfect examples of Islamic architecture and design in al-Qahira and al-Qata’i, Cairo builds on millennia of human ingenuity.  And it’s that humanness we want to emphasize here – the neighborhoods that grew up around these buildings, the food traditions from so many years and so many places, the religious observances that have continued for thousands of years.  Fatimids and Ful is all about how people have lived and created communities in one of the most important locations in the history of the world.

There are several ways to use this site. The best is to live in Cairo and spend some time exploring. We’ve arranged the information both by time and space.
